programs will focus on astronomy and the
holidays
Residents can
gaze at the stars, learn about the winter
solstice, and make holiday crafts at the Lyonia
Environmental Center (LEC) in December. The
center will be closed Dec. 3 and 4 for
installation of new displays.
Educational
programs include:
• “What are
circadian rhythms?” from 2 - 3 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 2, and from 10 - 11 a.m.
Thursday, Dec. 17: All ages are welcome for this
program, which will explore how the lunar cycle,
tides, seasonal changes and animal behaviors are
interconnected. Participation is free with paid
admission to the LEC.
• “Scrub
stroll” from 10 - 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4;
from 9 - 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11; and from 1:30
- 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec 19: Attendees will
take a botanical journey through Lyonia Preserve
to learn about scrub plants, their uses by
humans and animals, and their adaptations for
survival. This program, suggested for ages 10
and up, involves a one-hour hike in the
preserve. Participants should wear closed-toe
shoes and bring water, bug spray and hats. The
fee is $3. Space is limited, so please call to
reserve your place.
• “Holiday
wreath making” from 1 - 4 p.m. Saturday,
Dec. 5: LEC staff will help children and adults
make holiday wreaths. The $12 fee includes
wreath-making materials and admission to the LEC.
Participants may come early or stay afterward to
learn about Florida scrub habitat.
• “Star
party” from 7 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10;
and from 7 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15: Join the
LEC staff for a stargazing close-up view of the
night sky. Staff will provide equipment and
share their knowledge of the stars. This program
is appropriate for ages 10 and up. Participants
should dress for the outdoor weather.
Participation is free with paid admission to the
LEC.
• “Greening
your holiday” Saturday, Dec. 12: Create
crafts and holiday gifts from recycled
materials. Children’s crafts will be from 9 a.m.
- noon, and adult crafts will be from 1 - 4 p.m.
The $12 fee includes craft materials and
admission to the LEC. Participants may come
early or stay afterward to learn about Florida
scrub habitat.
• “Sunshine
daydreams” from 9 - 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec.
19: Learn about the winter solstice, Florida’s
seasons, and the sun’s effects on ecosystems.
This program, which is appropriate for ages 10
and up, will include an indoor presentation and
hike through Lyonia Preserve. Participants
should wear closed-toe shoes and bring water and
bug spray. Participation is free with paid
admission to the LEC.

participating adult.
Admission to
the LEC is $5 for teenagers and adults, $4 for
seniors, $2 for children ages 3 - 12, and free
for children 2 and under. Annual memberships are
available for $15 for students and senior
citizens, $25 for individuals, and $45 for
families.
The LEC is part
of the Deltona Regional Library complex at 2150
Eustace Ave. It is open from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays; from 9 a.m. -
7:30 p.m. Thursdays; from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Fridays and Saturdays; and from 1 - 5 p.m.
Sundays.
