A fungus among us
Much of the area in scrub is open space with little or no
vegetation. Often these areas are vegetated with lichens. Lichens are
organisms made up of algae that provide food, and fungi that provide
moisture. The lichen commonly found in the scrub is known as deer moss;
however, it is not a moss and whether or not deer feed upon it is
questionable. You may have already seen these organisms because the
model train industry uses deer moss as ornamentation.
