7. Florida's
desert
The soils that support this type of scrub vegetation are excessively
well-drained sands. Silt, clay, and organic matter which tend to capture
water are limited or absent in these soils. They are, as you may have
guessed, also low in nutrients. Because of the rapid percolation of
water and low water retention, scrub areas are often called "Florida's
Desert", even though these soils and scrub habitat receive approximately
the same amount of rainfall as other habitats.
